Strategies for Different Types of Sit and Gos
In the beginning, there was traditional sit and go. It had nine or ten players competing in a single table tournament, and this was more than sufficient for most players. However, players came to clamor for more and better variations and eventually caught the attention of the poker sites.
With different types of sit and gos, some strategy adjustments may be required.
Deep Stack Sit and Go Strategy
In deep stack texas hold em tournaments, players usually start out with around 5,000 chips, over 100 blinds’ worth. This means that players can afford to play extremely slowly since their stacks will not be jeopardized by the blinds for many, many rounds.
However, deep stack players often fail to do this. In many cases they are so excited by the amount of chips they have, that they feel invulnerable. In such cases, many players make bets and raises well out of proportion to the pot, in the neighborhood of six to eight times the big blind.
You can take advantage of this tendency by playing extremely tight. Rather than speculating as you normally might, hang back and wait for big hands. When they come, in many cases you’ll have a big pot at which to shoot.
Turbo Sit and Go Strategy
These tournaments, where the blinds go up typically every five minutes, almost require the opposite of deep stack strategy. You’ll have to play fast, since the blinds will start to represent a significant portion of the average stack fairly quickly.
Play the first round or two cautiously, as some desperate players may make some big mistakes and you want to give them the opportunity to do so. However, by the third round you’re going to have to get in there and start mixing it up, or else you risk being blinded off.
Quick-footed turbo sit and gos could be your way to qualify for 2008 WSOP. Give yourself a chance.
