12/10/2007Poker Tournaments - Why Aren't You Cashing
Poker tournaments are a lot of fun, but they can get expensive if
you’re not cashing, unless you are only playing freerolls,
of course. Furthermore, tournaments are a lot more fun when you win
money, and if you’ve played multiple tournaments without anything to
show for it, it can get very frustrating. If you’re not cashing, there
may be more than bad luck or even lack of skill involved. Here are some
reasons why you may not be cashing in your poker tournaments.
Bad Poker Tournament Structure
A good poker tournament offers a large number of starting relative to
the blinds. However this is not always enough. Live poker rooms often
want to end the tournament as quickly as possible to get the players
back to raked tables. Their subtle ways of doing this include not only
short chips, but also short round times and skipping blind levels (for
example, jumping from 300-600 blinds to 500-1000, forgoing the 400-800
round). The more these factors are affected, the more likely it is that
luck will overcome skill, especially as the tournament approaches the
money bubble. If you think this may be happening, you may choose to
start playing poker tournaments at online poker sites
where you have more options and the structure may be better, or you may
want to try to save up or play satellites to play a big buy-in
tournament where a good structure is paramount. There are lots of nice online
Texas Holdem tournaments to be found online.
Not Enough Tournament Trials
Just as in cash poker, there is an element of short-term luck in
tournament poker. Even the best players don’t cash in every tournament.
Every player is usually going to have to win a few coin flip races to
cash in a tournament, and these outcomes are something you as a player
have no control over. If you’re a good player who hasn’t cashed in a
tournament, you may just have not played enough tournaments yet.
Leaks in Your Poker Game
The reality could be that you’re just not good enough yet to beat the
poker tournaments you are playing in. After each tournament where you
fail to cash, you should go back and analyze your play. Consider the
key hands and ask yourself if you could have played them differently.
Honestly assess whether your loss was due to bad luck rather than poor
play. Sure if you lose after getting it all-in with pocket aces this is
unlucky, but could you have played better before the aces so that
getting cracked would have left you with some chips to rebuild your
stack? Use your losses as an opportunity to get better and you may end
your tournament drought sooner than you think.
